BILL BELICHICK DIDN’T HAVE a Bill Belichick. He had his dad, of course, but he never worked under Steve. His football education had taken place across the country, in different venues and with different men. To learn about him—to learn about the young coaches he taught and why he was such a dominant presence in their lives—I found myself in an office in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, across from a skinny 80-year-old man with fading blue eyes and a ski-jump nose. His name was Ken Shipp, and he had been a longtime NFL coach best known for his innovative passing offense in the 1970s. There were framed and signed pictures of Joe Namath and of Peyton and Eli Manning. Shipp pointed to a small off-white piece of stationery tacked to a wall, with three little Lombardi trophies and BILL BELICHICK in blue lettering.

Dear Ken,

I still have a lot of great memories from our time together in Detroit. I was fortunate to be introduced into your offensive system at such an early age. Thanks for your support + guidance.

Best wishes always,

Bill
